Fad Diets: Why Are They Bad?

There is a reason why “fad diet” is generally used as a derisive term; these diets more often than not fail to give lasting results. While you’ll find all kinds of diets on the internet which claim to help you lose a lot of weight in a very short time, this weight loss is typically water weight, which will be regained very quickly – and a lot of these diets are very unhealthy.

Some fad diets are not as drastic as these crash diets, but are merely diet plans of one sort or another which go in and out of style like haircuts, while making a fortune for the companies marketing them.  While some of these diets are nutritionally sound and can really help you lose weight, you probably could have gotten the same advice from your doctor at no cost. Others are very hard to stick to, with most dieters dropping out in as little as a week.

What’s wrong with fad diets?

1. The diets which claim to produce quick, easy weight loss typically work by limiting your intake of certain foods rather than being a nutritionally balanced plan. Many of these diets recommend taking supplements to replace the nutrients your diet is lacking, but the problem is that most of these nutrients cannot be efficiently absorbed unless taken with some of the same foods which the diet restricts. This means you run a serious risk of nutritional deficiencies.

2. Fad diets tend to be too restrictive and lead to boredom. After the first few days, you’ll probably start to dread mealtimes – and before you know it, you’ll be off the diet.

3. Fad diets do not tend to follow the guidelines laid out by the American Heart Association and other authorities regarding dietary fat. These diets are often low in carbs, but very high in fat – which means an elevated risk for heart disease over the long term. These diets usually state that they are only to be followed for a short while, but many keep on these diets for longer than the recommended period; what the promoters of these fad diets don’t tell you is that you may well not reach your target weight in this time. This leaves dieters either sticking with diets which damage their health or dropping out of the diet and regaining any weight which they lost.

4. These fad diets also usually fail to include enough fruits and vegetables into your diet; and almost all don’t give you the varied diet you need for nutritional balance.

5.  Crash diets offer only a temporary solution and do nothing to change your eating habits in the long run. You need to choose a healthier lifestyle and stick with it if you want to reach and stay at your target weight. These fad diets just put you on a yo-yo pattern, continuously losing weight then gaining it back again. This is actually worse for you than being overweight!

So approach these fad diets with great skepticism – no matter what they try to tell you, they are not long term solutions. A balanced diet with lots of variety, moderation in portion sizes and regular exercise is the solution to weight loss and maintenance over the long term.
