High Protein Diets

As you walk into your closet you cannot help but be frustrated. As you look through the racks of clothes you know that nothing really fits you now. Somehow, your waistline has outgrown all of the clothes in your closet and not only is that plain annoying, but you cannot help but feel bad about yourself. There has to be something that you can do to get your weight under control so that you can once again fit into the clothes that you have hanging in your closet. One great and really healthy way to take control of your weight is by adjusting your lifestyle to include a high protein diet.

There are many different high protein diets around like the Zone Diet, the Atkins Diet, and the NutriSystem plan. All of these diets are centered around the fact that your body needs protein to fuel itself effectively. In fact, the Institute of Health’s Dietary Reference Intake tells you that you should have 10-35% of the days calories be drawn from protein sources. High protein diets can actually help your body to reduce dramatic swings in your blood sugar levels. Additionally, it can help you to lose more weight up front in a weight loss program, but it is worth noting that a lot of this weight is water weight that is being lost. Carbohydrates help your bodies tissues to hang onto that water, and when you eliminate that from your diet your body begins to flush out that water.

When you make the commitment to stick with high protein diets you need to eliminate carbs from your eating habits. That means that for breakfast you might have sausage and eggs, but certainly not pancakes or even juice. And if you want to have a cheeseburger you can do that, but you cannot have the bun that it comes on.

Though high protein diets are supported by many experts there are still others who feel that this type of diet is not healthful or sustainable. Experts have speculated that high protein diets like this encourage individuals to eat a higher fat diet than those who are pursuing more of a balanced diet. Additionally, it has also been questioned as to if this is really a lifestyle change that dieters will be able to stick with. Instead, many people have found that they can stick with this type of diet for a short amount of time, but after a while those carbohydrates can creep back into their day to day eating habits which almost immediately starts to put back on that weight.

Finding the right diet for you is tricky, and you need to be sure that you take the time to decide if a high protein diet is one that will work for you. No matter what your decision is the key to succeeding with any diet plan is to make sure that you understand the requirements of it.
