Basics of Losing Weight

The basic formula for losing weight is pretty simple: burn more calories than you consume, and you'll lose weight. In fact, each time you burn about 3500 more calories than you consume, you'll lose about a pound.

But there are some complicating factors. If you reduce the amount of calories you consume by too much, your body will adjust your metabolism so it consumes fewer calories. Then you're right back where you started from, only you're eating less.

Also, different kinds of calories have different effects on your metabolism that can affect how much weight you lose.

And you can also increase the number of calories you burn, by exercising.

So you not only need to reduce your calories, but you need to pay attention to the kind of calories you eat, and you may want to add exercise to your weight loss formula so that you can increase the number of calories you consume.
