Liposuction - Is it For You?
The answer to this question is of a personal nature.
Everyone needs to consider the pros and cons
of liposuction surgery and decide if this is what they
want. However, many people are deciding to go this route. They
are tired of fighting the never-ending exercises and dieting to
try and rid themselves of all the bulges that will not go
away.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction can involve a couple of different processes by
which the fat is removed from your body. Tumescent liposuction
is one procedure in which the surgeon injects a solution into
the fatty areas to be removed.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses ultrasonic energy. This
causes the fat to turn to liquid and then it is removed. The
most suitable people for this procedure are those who have good
elasticity in their skin.
How is Liposuction Done?
During tumescent liposuction your doctor will inject saline,
epinephrine and a painkiller into the bulges of fat to be
removed. The epinephrine helps to contract your blood vessels.
Either this method or the ultra sound method will be used. If
you choose the latter this involves the ultra sound waves
liquefying the fat and then the doctor uses a pump to pull the
excess fat out of your body.
The instrument used for this procedure is called a cannula.
This is inserted into the areas of fat through a tiny incision
in the skin. A suction pump or a syringe is used to take the
fat out and how long the procedure lasts depends upon how much
excess fat is to be removed.
Side Effects
As with any surgery there are always some risks. They could
include infection or the skin becoming discolored. These risks
are minimal and with the use of a good plastic surgeon there
should be no problem. The surgeon will know what amount of fat
he can remove so the risk of removing too much and causing
problems should not occur.
Possible Complications of Liposuction
While most doctors make very sure that complications are not
a part of your surgery sometimes in spite of all precautions,
liposuction can cause complications. Here are a few that my
arise after having this surgery.
- Infections
- Embolism
- Puncture wounds in organs
- Seroma
- Nerve compression
- Fluid imbalance
- Swelling
Although these complications are rare, they can occur. The
doctor who tells you there will be no complications should be
avoided. Get another doctor and get one quickly.
What Benefits Should I Expect?
At the very least you should expect to rid yourself of those
unsightly bulges and feel better about yourself. Your health
will be better and the cellulite will not be as noticeable. You
will have a new you without all the bulges and you might be
surprised what a difference it makes in your appearance.
All in all, liposuction can be very beneficial for many
people. The fact still remains that this is indeed a personal
choice for many who have either to decide they will have this
surgery or they will not.
